What else is the spice used for?

An unique spicy pumpkin pie spice

There is a very good chance you already have all you need to make this wonderful, warm spice combination yourself. Pumpkin Pie Spice is a mixture of cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg and cloves. You will find some recipes that have additional ingredients such as cardamom or mace. Pumpkin Pie Spice is very easy to make at home. You simply combine the ingredients into an airtight container and shake to mix. What could be easier?

A better pumpkin pie spice

If you don’t keep a multitude of spices in your cupboard, you can easily purchase ready-made Pumpkin Pie Spice from your local grocer. You’ll find it in the spice section of the baking aisle along with the extracts.

Why you should make your own pumpkin pie spice?

Making your own spice costs less than buying a big jar of something pre-made, that has more than you can use in a single season. Most likely you already have all the ingredients for this spice. It’s also better to make smaller batches so that you use up the blend before it starts to go stale and loses its flavor and character. Finally, you can modify the blend to what you like: go for more cinnamon or no cloves if you can’t stand the flavor. Once you’ve make your own, you’ll never want to buy a commercial blend again.

Do you know the cousin to pumpkin pie spice? Hint China.

Yes the Chinese Five Spice is also good in pumpkin pies? So here you will also find some recipes for Chinese Five Spice Powder. This can be purchased ready-made, but it could be more difficult to find. If your local grocery store doesn’t carry it, you might see if there is an Asian or international market nearby. Still having trouble? You can check with your grocery store manager about ordering it in for you or try making your own with one of the recipes below.

Keep in mind what we said earlier- your spices should enhance the flavor of your pie, not overwhelm it. Use half as much you might put in. You can always add more later.

Feel free to use any of these recipes to substitute for pumpkin pie spice.

Give it a fast taste test.

After mixing in the spices, take a tablespoon of the pumpkin mixture, add it to a microwave save dish like a tea cup. Cook it for about a minute and cool. If the taste is not right, add more spices.
